The Woman of Firsts’
A classic pursuit of the American dream which was finally proven true and history was made. After two centuries, women have finally been entitled to the most supreme political title in U.S. democracy. This title is the vice-presidential position in which Sen. Kamala Devi Harris became the first female vice-president of the United States of America. Sen. Kamala Harris played a cardinal role in Joe Biden’s victory for the presidential election of 2020.
She is the ‘women of firsts’ and has been continually proving that for the past decade. Harris put an end to one of the most quintessential roles of the high political office where most of the people who hold such preeminent positions are only males. Kamala’s father, Donald J. Harris, who is a Jamaican-American economist, and her mother Shyamala Gopalan was an American biomedical scientist born in India. Her parents, father, and mother immigrated to America for the prospective possibilities their family can achieve and believed that anything is possible in America.
When she embarked on her career in politics, she began at Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, Oakland. The most important highlights in her career were when she got elected as an Attorney General of California in 2010. She was the first African American, the first South Asian American, and the first woman to hold the office of Attorney General in the state’s history. Then she served as the junior United States senator from California since 2017. This wasn’t the end. She decided to run for the presidential election. And soon, she became a vice-presidential nominee for Joe Biden. She is the first woman who became the vice-president and is African American. She also belongs of southern-Asian descent. Her interracial family has been the key to vast diversity in the United States.
Many women have faced struggles in politics since the gender disparity is extremely high. Since only 25% of the seats in the U.S. senate are of women. U.S. Senate has the power to initiate impeachment trials, the president is nominated through the consent of the U.S. Senate, and many other major powers which no other office has access to. Her journey has been full of struggles. She boldly said, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I may not be the last.” Her speech echoed around the world. This is not just a victory for the U.S. but also for other countries’ governments since more countries will become susceptible to women serving in high positions in each and every field. This 2020 year was a very significant year which marked hardships, racial and police injustice but also included Kamala Harris getting entitled to a V.P. position. Her win was celebrated across the world. People at her mother’s hometown, Thulasendrapuran, a small village in Tamil Nadu celebrated Kamala’s victory and were proud of her.
